The retirement of long-serving Justice of the Peace Joe B. Getzwiller has opened up a significant opportunity in Maricopa County’s judiciary. Following his departure on December 31, 2025, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is actively seeking qualified candidates to fill the Ironwood Justice Precinct position.
The Ironwood Justice Precinct, a key part of southwestern Maricopa County within Supervisorial District 5, encompasses areas like Gila Bend. For more details on the precinct’s jurisdiction, you can view the map here.
The role of a Justice of the Peace involves overseeing a variety of legal matters, including traffic offenses, small claims, evictions, and civil disputes with claims up to $10,000. This position, typically filled through elections, will be temporarily appointed by the Board due to the unexpected vacancy.
To qualify for this appointment, candidates must be registered Republicans, reside within the Ironwood Justice Precinct, and be registered voters in Arizona. The appointed individual will serve until December 31, 2026, completing the term initiated by Getzwiller.
Interested applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and their resume either by emailing clerkboard@maricopa.gov or by mailing to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors at 301 W. Jefferson St, Phoenix, AZ 85003 (10th floor). The deadline for applications is Monday, January 12, 2026 at 5pm. Be aware that application materials will become public records, and a background check will be conducted on all candidates.
