The Bureau of Land Management’s Role in Public Land Stewardship
As stewards of the nation’s natural resources, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees a vast expanse of public lands and mineral estates across the United States. Charged with the mission of maintaining these lands for both current enjoyment and future generations, the BLM plays a crucial role in resource management.
“The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation,” according to the BLM’s recent communication.
Public lands managed by the BLM are predominantly located in the western U.S., including Alaska. These lands are not only critical for conservation efforts but also serve as a resource for energy production, recreation, and grazing.
