The University of Iowa’s Cambus system is set to undergo a significant upgrade thanks to a substantial grant from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low and No Emissions Program. The grant, totaling over $6 million, will facilitate the replacement of aging buses with modern diesel-electric hybrid models, promising improvements in service reliability and rider comfort.
Cambus manager Mia Brunelli expressed enthusiasm about the grant’s impact, stating, “Receiving this funding will yield significant benefits for students, staff, faculty, and campus visitors. These upgrades will mean a better experience for riders through more reliable service and will improve the efficiency of our operations.”
Enhanced Experience for Riders
The grant of $6,171,174 will specifically enable the replacement of six buses originally purchased in 2008 and 2009, which were slated for retirement by 2022. These new diesel-electric hybrid buses are expected to require less maintenance, thereby reducing the likelihood of service disruptions and enhancing the overall ride quality for the university community.
