Nevada’s Tourism Slump: Cortez Masto Challenges Trump’s Trade Policies

Nevada’s Economy Struggles Amid Ongoing Tourism Decline

Nevada’s economy is facing significant challenges as the tourism sector, a cornerstone of the state’s financial stability, experiences a downturn. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto is actively opposing the tariff policies of former President Donald Trump, which she claims are destabilizing the economy and deterring international visitors.

The state’s tourism industry, heavily reliant on international visitors, is witnessing a marked decline in activity. Passenger numbers at Harry Reid International Airport are dropping, and Downtown Las Vegas hotels are struggling, with occupancy rates at just 66.4%. Despite bipartisan efforts from Nevada’s federal representatives, the Trump administration has not appointed an assistant secretary of travel and tourism within the Department of Commerce, a move deemed necessary by many to address the current crisis.

Governor Joe Lombardo, aligning with Trump’s economic approach, suggests that Nevadans may need to “feel a little pain” due to these trade policies. Many residents, including Republicans, are already facing financial hardships, resorting to emergency savings and even donating blood to cover basic expenses. The state’s unemployment rate was the highest in the nation for the first half of 2025, exceeding levels seen when Lombardo assumed office.

Las Vegas Sun: Tourism slide prompts Cortez Masto to demand White House response

  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has accused the Trump administration of ignoring her requests for data regarding the decline in U.S. tourism, leaving Nevada’s economy vulnerable amid decreasing visitor numbers.
  • In a letter to the White House dated November 24, Cortez Masto warned that funding cuts to Brand USA and ongoing tariff uncertainties are jeopardizing jobs in Nevada, one of the nation’s most tourism-dependent states.
  • The senator’s efforts highlight broader concerns as Las Vegas experiences a “Trump slump” in visitor numbers.
  • According to the U.S. Travel Association, tourism supports approximately one in four jobs in Nevada. Brand USA has been credited with generating billions in visitor spending nationwide since its inception in 2010.
  • Cortez Masto is advocating for the appointment of an assistant secretary of travel and tourism within the Department of Commerce.
  • Recently, the senator co-sponsored legislation to restore funding to Brand USA, which was slashed by 80% in the Republican-endorsed “One Big Beautiful Bill,” reducing federal matching funds to $20 million.
  • The downturn in tourism in 2025 has been dubbed the “Trump slump” by Nevada Democrats. Statistics from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reveal a 7.4% decrease in Las Vegas visitation through November compared to 2024. International arrivals at Harry Reid International Airport dropped 6% during the same period, with significant declines from Canada amid trade tensions and annexation rhetoric from President Trump.
