Reno City Council Advances Key Projects and Initiatives in Recent Meeting
In a series of significant decisions, the Reno City Council has made strides in improving local infrastructure, supporting youth programs, and enhancing environmental health. The outcomes of the recent Regular Meeting present promising developments for the city’s future.
Sidewalk Connectivity Project on Grand Canyon Boulevard
The Council greenlit an agreement with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to enhance sidewalk connectivity in the Grand Canyon Boulevard area. The $251,580 project will be largely funded by Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside funds, covering 95% of the costs, while the city will contribute $12,579. This initiative will see the construction of approximately 1,100 feet of new sidewalks and the refurbishment of existing ones, aiming to improve pedestrian safety and access to public transit. The construction is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
Support for Youth Programs Through Scholarship Reimbursements
In a move to bolster recreational opportunities for children, the Council approved a financial agreement to receive $414,375 from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services. Administered by the Children’s Cabinet, this funding will support the city’s Sierra Kids program, offering scholarships for before and after school care and full-day camps. The initiative will span from October 2025 to September 2026, providing essential services to low-income families.
Rivermount Neighborhood Sewer Main Project
Addressing critical environmental and health concerns, the Council approved the installation of a sewer main in the Rivermount Neighborhood, where many properties still rely on outdated septic systems. The $4.4 million project will be partially funded by a $3.095 million grant from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, with the remainder initially covered by the city’s Sewer Fund. An area-specific sewer connection fee will be established to recover these costs over time. Construction will occur in two phases, beginning in spring 2026.
River Bend Regional Plan Amendment
The sponsorship of a regional plan amendment was another key decision, facilitating the relocation of a 120kV transmission line to the perimeter of a development site in Ward 5. This adjustment supports the creation of an 82-lot single-family subdivision and consolidates power lines into a shared easement. The amendment awaits final approval by the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Governing Board.
Streamlining Childcare Facility Regulations
In response to the critical need for affordable childcare, the Council adopted a text amendment to the city’s zoning code. The changes aim to simplify the establishment of childcare facilities by removing certain permit requirements and adding development standards. With Nevada ranking as one of the least affordable states for infant care, these adjustments are intended to address the state’s extensive childcare deserts.
Board Appointments
- Addison Guinan and Colin Pilcher have joined the Youth City Council.
- John Zanoni has been appointed to the Financial Advisory Board.
