Shane Henderson Wins Prestigious Milken Educator Award at Pittsboro School

In a thrilling surprise at Pittsboro Elementary School, fourth grade teacher Shane Henderson was recognized as the latest recipient of the esteemed Milken Educator Award during what appeared to be a routine school assembly.

This notable accolade comes with a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize. The announcement was made by Stephanie Bishop, Vice President of the Milken Educator Awards, alongside North Carolina’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, Maurice “Mo” Green, in front of an enthusiastic audience of students, teachers, and community figures.

“Shane Henderson’s deep passion and commitment to student success exemplify why he makes a great Milken Educator Award recipient,” stated Green. “He keeps students at the heart of his work, creating inclusive learning environments to support all students along their educational journey. Mr. Henderson is a wonderful example of why we need to revere educators—his selfless dedication has shaped the future of our state.”

Henderson stands as the only recipient of the award from North Carolina for the 2025-26 cycle and marks the 58th awardee from the state since its inclusion in the program in 1994.

Bishop, a Milken Educator from Virginia, praised Henderson’s contributions, saying, “Shane Henderson’s work models best practices in instructional leadership, peer mentoring and professional collaboration, making him a standout educator and model for the profession. Welcome to the Milken Educator Network, Shane! We’re thrilled to have you join this prestigious community of educators.”

This year, the Milken Family Foundation will honor 30 educators nationwide, expanding the network to over 3,000 distinguished professionals. Since its inception by Lowell Milken in 1987, the Milken Educator Awards have aimed to inspire excellence in the K-12 teaching profession, with over $76 million in prizes distributed to date.

Selected educators, including Henderson, are typically unaware of their nomination. They are chosen based on their accomplishments and potential for future contributions, enhanced by the award’s resources and opportunities.
