West Des Moines Welcomes New Police Chief from Houston
In a significant leadership transition, West Des Moines has appointed Craig Bellamy as the new Police Chief, effective February 2, 2026. This appointment follows the announcement of retirement by the current Police Chief, Chris Scott, earlier this year.
Craig Bellamy brings over three decades of law enforcement experience from Houston, Texas, where he has served in numerous capacities since joining the police force in 1994. Bellamy’s career began as a patrol officer and expanded through various roles, including Accident Investigator, DWI Task Force Officer, and Nightshift Jail Sergeant. His leadership roles have encompassed positions as Dayshift Administrative Sergeant, DWI Task Force Lieutenant, Radar Task Force Lieutenant, and TAC Lieutenant.
As a Captain in Houston, Bellamy commanded several divisions such as the South Gessner Patrol Division, Gang Division, Cyber and Financial Crimes Division, Academy and Training Division, Tactical Operations Department, and Kingwood Patrol Division. His extensive experience and leadership skills are expected to greatly benefit West Des Moines as he steps into his new role.
Bellamy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Baylor University and a Master of Science in Law Enforcement Executive Leadership from California Southern University, credentials that underscore his commitment to law enforcement education and leadership.
Tom Hadden, West Des Moines City Manager, expressed confidence in Bellamy’s capabilities, stating, “His resume is impressive and his breadth of experience will be valuable as we continue to grow our community. I’m looking forward to working with him as our new Police Chief.”
Additionally, Hadden acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Chief Chris Scott, noting, “Chief Scott has been a great asset to the department, and we wish him nothing but the best in his retirement.”
