This year marked the seventh iteration of the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) Student Program, which welcomed over 70 interns to its 12-week summer initiative. These students, working at NNSS locations nationwide, engaged in projects that provided practical experience and allowed them to collaborate with experts and mentors, all while supporting the critical mission of national security.

“We are investing in the future workforce,” stated Talent Acquisition Manager Kavery Berndt. “By providing hands-on opportunities, mentorship and exposure to professional-level projects, we’re helping students build the skills they need to launch successful careers. At the same time, they are bringing in fresh perspectives, further strengthening the workforce.”

Since its inception in 2019, the NNSS Student Program has offered paid internships in both in-person and hybrid formats, aiming to equip students with mentorship, workplace training, and real-world insights into national security efforts.

To showcase the program’s development, students are tasked with presenting their project work at the conclusion of the summer. Those who excel are given the chance to present to senior leadership, reflecting the program’s commitment to cultivating future leaders.

University Relations Coordinator Nelida Rodriguez emphasized, “By investing in our interns, we are investing in the future of the NNSS. Every year our interns bring so much excitement and new ideas! They are ready to learn and gain real experience. This year was no different. At every event, students showed up eager and excited to learn about our mission.”

The program’s effectiveness is evident with 10 interns transitioning to full-time positions and about 60% continuing part-time while pursuing their academic goals.

“It’s always hard to see the program come to an end, but watching students transition into full-time roles is incredibly rewarding,” added Berndt. For those interested in participating, applications for the 2026 Student Program are now available. Apply by Jan. 30, 2026.
