In a landmark event held in Rocky Mount, a record-breaking cohort of 149 individuals graduated from the NCDMV Driver License Examiner Basic School. This ceremony, attended by Governor Josh Stein and NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine, marks the largest group of new examiners to complete the program, promising enhanced service for drivers throughout North Carolina.
Governor Stein’s Commitment to Efficiency
Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of efficient service for DMV visitors, stating, “Hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians visit the DMV each year, and they deserve a fast and easy experience so they can get on with their day.” He expressed pride in the graduates and affirmed his commitment to improving DMV services across the state.
Impact of New Examiners
DMV Commissioner Paul Tine highlighted the benefits these graduates will bring to DMV offices statewide. “Every new examiner means shorter lines, quicker service, and a better experience for customers,” he noted, acknowledging that while progress has been made, efforts continue to refine DMV operations.
Tackling Training Backlogs
This fall, the North Carolina DMV successfully addressed a six-month training backlog through a series of seven-week training sessions. In August, Governor Stein signed House Bill 125, which allocated funds for additional examiner positions. Consequently, 64 new roles were filled, contributing to this unprecedented graduating class.
Online Renewals and Staffing Improvements
Further enhancing DMV efficiency, Governor Stein signed House Bill 245 in September, broadening online renewal capabilities. This initiative has facilitated nearly 80,000 renewals in just nine weeks, easing congestion at DMV locations. Additionally, DMV staffing vacancies have decreased to below 5% out of 632 positions.
