Strategic Investments Propel Pennsylvania’s Economic Growth
Pittsburgh-based Calgon Carbon Corporation, the world leader in activated carbon products, is poised for expansion with a $300,000 grant from the Commonwealth. This investment aims to create 23 new high-paying jobs while retaining 405 existing positions in the region.
Pennsylvania is making strides as the sole state in the Northeast with a burgeoning economy, standing out in a competitive landscape against states like Texas, New York, and Ohio.
Harrisburg, PA – Governor Josh Shapiro has unveiled a $13.2 million investment initiative by Calgon Carbon Corporation to enhance its Pittsburgh facilities. The state will contribute $300,000 to support this expansion, targeting the creation of 23 new jobs over the next four years while safeguarding 405 existing roles.
Calgon Carbon plans to expand its activated carbon recycling plant and warehouse in Neville Township with an 11,000-square-foot addition. A separate 35,000-square-foot expansion is also slated for its equipment fabrication operations at another Neville Township location.
Pennsylvania’s success in securing this project, amidst competition from several states, highlights its growing economic strength. Governor Shapiro emphasized, “Under my Administration, Pennsylvania is competing aggressively — and winning — on both the national and global stage.”
The investment is bolstered by a $300,000 Pennsylvania First grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). DCED Secretary Rick Siger noted, “This expansion will allow Calgon Carbon to increase its production and recycling capabilities in Pittsburgh, creating more high-paying manufacturing jobs in the region.”
Previously, Secretary Siger advocated for this project during a business trip to Japan, promoting Pennsylvania’s favorable business environment. The Shapiro Administration continues to market the Commonwealth’s vibrant culture and economic momentum on the global stage.
Calgon Carbon, headquartered in Pittsburgh, leads the global market in activated carbon solutions for over 700 applications ranging from drinking water to industrial processes. The company’s Neville Township facility plays a critical role in national defense, supplying materials for military gas masks and protection filters.
Calgon Carbon’s President and CEO, Steve Schott, stated, “This investment reinforces our long-term commitment to growing in the Pittsburgh region. By expanding our operations, we are strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity and supply reliability for customers who depend on activated carbon and reactivation services.”
The project is coordinated by Governor Shapiro’s BusinessPA team, which assists businesses to thrive in Pennsylvania through tailored guidance and resources.
