West Des Moines City Hall Holiday Closures and Winter Collection Info

West Des Moines Prepares for Holiday Closures and Adjusted Waste Collection

As the holiday season approaches, West Des Moines City Hall and most city offices will not be open on Wednesday, December 24, Thursday, December 25, 2025, and Thursday, January 1, 2026. These closures will affect several city services, including the schedule for recycling and garbage collection, which will be delayed by one day following the holidays on December 25 and January 1.

Residents looking to dispose of yard waste and real Christmas trees have a final opportunity during the special Winter Collection period, running from December 29, 2025, to January 9, 2026. Collection services will experience a one-day delay after the New Year’s Day holiday.

To participate in the Winter Collection, residents must place a Compost It! sticker on each live Christmas tree they wish to dispose of. Trees should be free of decorations and positioned at the curb by 6 a.m. on the designated collection day. It is important to note that wreaths and garland are not accepted. Stickers can be purchased at local grocery and hardware stores.

This period is the last chance for residents to dispose of yard waste until spring. To ensure pickup by collection crews, residents should use Compost It! bags, attach a Compost It! sticker to non-branded bags, or utilize the Compost It! yard waste cart.
