Arizona Commerce Authority Expands Support with New Venture Programs

Arizona Startups to Benefit from Expanded Innovation Programs

PHOENIX, AZ (August 1, 2024) — The Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA) today unveiled plans to expand its Arizona Innovation Challenge (AIC) program, aimed at advancing the growth of Arizona-based startups.

The ACA is introducing three enhanced venture initiatives: Venture Scale, Venture Raise, and Venture Start, designed to provide individualized support to startups engaged in the Arizona Innovation Challenge, one of the largest business plan competitions in the country.

Program Evolution

Since its inception in 2011, the AIC has been a catalyst for identifying and fostering promising startups in Arizona. More than 140 awardees have been selected from over 2,800 applicants, amassing a combined portfolio value exceeding $5.8 billion.

The program has benefited diverse sectors such as IT, software, bio and life sciences, cleantech, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. Noteworthy alumni include AlgoFace, Botco.ai, CampusLogic, Paradox, Ampcera, GT Medical Technologies, and Trainual, among others.

Previously, AIC awardees were enrolled in the ACA’s Venture Ready Accelerator, a six-month mentorship initiative to refine business strategies and enhance investor appeal.

New Developments

The Venture Ready Accelerator has now been rebranded as Venture Scale, linking up to 10 AIC awardees with seasoned entrepreneurs and experts. This flagship program aims to support the state’s top startups.

Additionally, the ACA is launching Venture Raise and Venture Start. Venture Raise is a 12-week accelerator assisting AIC semifinalists and finalists with funding strategies, investor presentations, and financial planning. Meanwhile, Venture Start caters to early-stage startups, offering mentorship to refine business plans and prepare for competitions like the AIC.

According to Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, The success of Arizona small businesses is fundamental to the success of Arizona’s economy, which is why the ACA continues to prioritize our startup ecosystem. She added that the new programs aim to provide critical mentorship and support to entrepreneurs.

Gregg Scoresby, founder of PHX Ventures and a 2015 AIC awardee, emphasized that like any successful organization, the ACA continues to innovate and elevate its programs to serve the needs of Arizona’s evolving startup ecosystem.

Chris Ronzio, CEO of Trainual and a past AIC awardee, applauded the initiative, noting the program’s role in preparing his company to secure venture capital funding.
