Las Vegas Tourism and Economy Plummet Amid Trump’s Trade Policies

Declining Tourism and Economic Challenges in Las Vegas Amid Trade Policy Impacts

Recent developments reveal that Las Vegas is facing a significant downturn in tourism, with passenger numbers at Harry Reid International Airport experiencing their largest drop since January 2021. This comes as trade policies endorsed by former President Donald Trump continue to affect the economy and discourage international visitors, a situation that Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo appears hesitant to challenge.

The report detailing passenger numbers at the airport highlights a troubling trend: a nearly 8% reduction in tourist visits to Las Vegas this year, with over 2.6 million fewer tourists compared to the previous year. This marks the ninth consecutive month of decline, significantly affecting local businesses and workers.

Governor Lombardo, who has publicly supported Trump’s endorsement, stated that Nevadans should “feel a little pain” due to these trade policies. His stance is controversial as these policies are linked to increased costs and economic strain on families and small businesses in Nevada, forcing many to rely on emergency savings and even donating blood to make ends meet.

Impact on Air Travel

The Clark County Department of Aviation reported that Harry Reid International Airport saw its steepest passenger decline this year. Notably, the two largest Canadian airlines, WestJet and Air Canada, experienced significant reductions in passenger numbers from October 2024, dropping by 33.2% and 26.3%, respectively. Year-to-date figures show a 5.1% decrease in total passengers, with domestic travel down 5.2% and international travel falling 4.5%.

Economic Implications

Amid these challenges, Nevada witnessed the highest unemployment rate of any state in the U.S. for the first half of 2025. This economic strain comes despite Governor Lombardo’s leadership, who assumed office when the state’s unemployment rate was comparatively lower. The current situation underscores the broader impact of national trade policies on local economies, particularly in tourism-dependent regions like Las Vegas.
