Adam Bedeir Named 2025 Flinn Scholar, Joins U of A Honors College

In the heart of Paradise Valley, Arizona, if you happen upon a tennis racket propped against a pile of anatomy flashcards, it’s likely that Adam Bedeir isn’t far off. The soon-to-be graduate from BASIS Phoenix is set to join an elite cohort as one of the 2025 Flinn Scholars at the University of Arizona this fall.

The Flinn Scholarship, a distinguished award supporting high-achieving students at Arizona’s state universities, was announced by the Flinn Foundation, a Phoenix-based nonprofit dedicated to grantmaking in Arizona’s bioscience, arts, and culture sectors. This scholarship covers tuition, fees, housing, meals, and more, totaling over $135,000 in value. Additionally, recipients are offered at least two study abroad opportunities, including a group seminar after their first college year.

Half of this year’s 20 Flinn Scholars have chosen the University of Arizona, where they will become part of the W.A. Franke Honors College.

“Being named a Flinn Scholar is a really special feeling, but also a responsibility,” Bedeir expressed. “The scholarship not only provides me with the resources to attend college, but I am joining a community that helps make Arizona special. Flinn Scholars take so much pride in their work – and it is truly exciting to give back to the state of Arizona.”

This year’s scholars are set to delve into a wide range of fields such as computer science, engineering, social sciences, law, business, education, arts, data science, public policy, and both biological and physical sciences.

Bedeir plans to pursue physiology and medical science at the College of Medicine – Tucson. He is involved in the prestigious Accelerated Pathway to Medical Education program, enabling a select group of students to earn a medical degree in seven years.

John Pollard, the Franke Dean of the W.A. Franke Honors College, highlighted the significance of welcoming students like Bedeir. “Franke Honors is thrilled to welcome our newest class of Flinn Scholars, and we are honored that these incredible students chose us for their undergraduate experience,” Pollard said. “Their choice is a testament to the amazing undergraduate research opportunities, academic programming, and community within Franke Honors and the University of Arizona, and we are excited to support them, from their first year as Wildcats through graduation and beyond.”

Erin Deely, who leads strategic recruitment and outreach for the W.A. Franke Honors College and advises on the Flinn Scholarship, remarked on the university’s appeal to students: “Here at the University of Arizona, we create an environment where all students can succeed and excel – and the W.A. Franke Honors College in particular is such an incredible environment for students,” Deely said. “We have the infrastructure and support students often need to achieve the goals and high standards they set for themselves, while developing the collaborative connections they need. We also want to retain their incredible talent within the state of Arizona, because they are the next generation of leaders and changemakers.”

Flinn Scholars benefit from guidance by faculty and staff, including specific scholarship advisers like Deely. The college aids students in securing research grants, internships, and other opportunities, maintaining partnerships with organizations like the Flinn Foundation to connect scholars with their peers and alumni.

Bedeir, a standout both academically and athletically, was drawn to the University of Arizona for its robust medical programs. “I want to apply the skills I learn in medicine to help those who need it most, and the College of Medicine has a lot of great programs for that,” Bedeir stated. “I want to do research for the sake of helping those who need it. I want to improve conditions and treatments and learn as much medicine as I can. I want to be as helpful as I can to those I serve.”

His interest in physiology was sparked by a love for biology in high school and has grown through his work as a medical assistant at a local vascular clinic. He also contributes to Project C.U.R.E., which distributes donated medical supplies to underserved communities. Tennis and reading are among the activities Bedeir balances with his rigorous academic and clinical commitments.
