Exploring AI’s Impact: Innovation, Responsibility, and Future Challenges

Once a trailblazer in digital media, the Huffington Post achieved a significant milestone under the leadership of its editor-in-chief until 2016, Arianna Huffington. The platform not only earned a Pulitzer Prize in 2012, making it the first digital-native outlet to secure such an honor, but Huffington herself was recognized among Time magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people and Forbes’ most powerful women.

“I am pleased to welcome these distinguished speakers to campus to discuss AI at this pivotal moment,” stated President Joseph J. Helble ’82, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming discussions. “Their insights and perspectives should provide helpful context as we all consider and explore the benefits and challenges the rapidly expanding use of artificial intelligence offers for society.”

AI: Innovation, Responsibility and the Future We Shape

This year’s theme, AI: Innovation, Responsibility and the Future We Shape, delves into the swift progression of artificial intelligence and the implications of living in a world increasingly driven by AI.

The rapid development of artificial intelligence is transforming industries, economies, and society at large at an unprecedented pace. While AI’s potential for fostering innovation and advancement is substantial, it also introduces a host of complex issues such as ethical dilemmas, disruptions in the workforce, privacy concerns, and questions regarding bias and accountability. With corporate and business interests primarily steering AI’s growth, the responsibility of ensuring its alignment with humanity’s best interests comes into question.

Throughout the discussions, participants will explore the opportunities presented by AI while grappling with the challenges that emerge when economic gains and technological advancements outpace policy and ethical considerations.

Launched in 2023, the Compelling Perspectives series serves as a platform for civil discourse on pressing societal issues. This initiative aims to highlight diverse viewpoints on current topics that are shaping the world.

Those interested in attending must complete advance registration as the event has limited space. Please register by September 15 to secure your place.
