Investment in Pennsylvania’s Manufacturing Workforce: A Boost for Future Careers
Pennsylvania is taking significant steps to enhance its workforce capabilities through targeted training programs aimed at bridging skill gaps in the manufacturing sector.
Harrisburg, PA – In a bid to strengthen Pennsylvania’s workforce, the Shapiro Administration is allocating $40,000 to the Manufacturing PA Training-to-Career (MTTC) initiative. The grant supports the Work Ready program at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, focusing on equipping students with essential skills for manufacturing roles.
The Work Ready program is set to train approximately 200 students across Cambria and Somerset counties, in collaboration with local manufacturers. The initiative not only offers practical manufacturing skills but also enhances soft skills like communication and time management.
“The Shapiro Administration understands that in order for our economy to thrive, we must invest in our workforce,” stated DCED Secretary Rick Siger. “Our students need skills to successfully begin their careers in Pennsylvania — filling critical positions and building up the Commonwealth’s future for years to come.”
Governor Shapiro’s administration is focused on strengthening workforce development through classroom to career and apprenticeship programs. These efforts aim to prepare Pennsylvanians for well-paying jobs that contribute to community vitality.
Julie Davis, Director of Workforce Education at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, highlighted the importance of the MTTC grant: “By bridging classroom instruction with real-world manufacturing experience, this grant provides participants with access to industry-aligned training.” Participants will earn Essential Skills certificates, opening doors to employment and further educational opportunities.
The college’s partnerships with regional businesses and educational institutions play a crucial role in shaping the program. Feedback from partners like BCL Manufacturing, GapVax, and local school districts ensures the training meets industry needs.
Deborah Cover, Vice President of Talent Acquisition at GapVax, noted, “Work readiness skills are important to our company and staff because it takes an abundance of resources to onboard inexperienced individuals, lacking in skillsets that are necessary in manufacturing.”
Governor Shapiro’s 2025-2026 budget proposal emphasizes workforce future investments, aiming to increase competitiveness and community resilience. Highlights include:
- $12.5 million to expand the workforce through WEDnetPA
- $2 million for Career Connect internships at state companies
- $50 million for life science job growth in the innovation ecosystem
- $50 million towards Housing Stock Restoration
- $10 million increase for Act 47 Program supporting financially distressed communities
