Reward Offered for Information on Sand Mountain Recreation Area Arson
CARSON CITY, Nev. – In a troubling act of vandalism, the Sand Mountain Recreation Area has lost a vital public restroom to arson. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is actively seeking assistance from the public to identify those behind the incident and is offering a $6,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
Over the weekend, emergency responders, including Churchill County firefighters and sheriff’s deputies, arrived at the site to find a campground restroom fully ablaze. After a thorough investigation, the Nevada State Police State Fire Marshal Division concluded that the fire was deliberately set, with suspected accelerants involved. The restroom has been declared a total loss, and the BLM is spearheading the investigation.
Matt Magaletti, the Acting District Manager, commented on the incident, stating, “Places like Sand Mountain create lasting memories for families, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. People come to Sand Mountain to enjoy their public lands, and deliberately destroying a facility they depend on takes something away from everyone who visits. We’re hoping someone saw or heard something that could help investigators. Even the smallest detail could help investigators identify who is responsible.”
The BLM urges anyone who was in the Sand Mountain Recreation Area during the evening of October 24 or the early morning hours of October 25 to come forward if they witnessed any suspicious activity or have pertinent information regarding the fire.
Individuals with tips are encouraged to report them to BLM Law Enforcement. Callers have the option to remain anonymous, and those providing information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties may be eligible for the $6,000 reward.
