The University of Arizona has been recognized as a leader in safeguarding free speech among U.S. universities. This accolade comes from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), which has highlighted the institution’s commitment to free expression.
In the recently published 2027 College Free Speech Rankings, the University of Arizona secured the 27th spot out of 262 nationwide institutions evaluated for their free speech protections. Notably, it holds the top position within Arizona.
FIRE, a nonprofit dedicated to defending free speech and thought, compiles these rankings annually. The aim is to assess the climate of free speech across American campuses and understand student attitudes towards this fundamental right.
The University of Arizona achieved an overall score of 71.8 and is among 77 institutions to receive a “green” spotlight rating. This rating reflects FIRE’s analysis of student speech policies at nearly 500 higher education institutions in the U.S. Remarkably, the University of Arizona reported no free speech controversies in 2026.
In collaboration with College Pulse, a firm specializing in student opinion research, FIRE conducts yearly surveys to gauge undergraduate perspectives on free speech. The current survey incorporated responses from almost 62,000 students.
