The Role of AI in Shaping Future Innovators: Insights from the UN’s Amandeep Gill
At a recent gathering at Lehigh University, Amandeep Gill, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies, shed light on the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. Over 150 attendees joined to hear his insights on September 2nd, as he elaborated on the critical role AI will play in the future.
Organized with the support of the Office of the Provost and the LU/UN Partnership, the event aimed to empower Lehigh University’s community. These initiatives strive to equip students, faculty, and staff with the skills required to become influential global contributors, fostering substantial engagement with the United Nations.
In his capacity at the UN, Gill leads efforts in AI governance, fosters digital cooperation, and oversees the implementation of the UN’s Global Digital Compact. He emphasized the importance of utilizing AI responsibly, encouraging students to cultivate independent judgment and the ability to synthesize ideas across various disciplines.
Gill highlighted that the distinctive edge for future professionals lies not in rote memorization, as machines excel at information retrieval, but in their capacity to connect diverse ideas. “Future workers will stand out not by memorizing information machines can retrieve, but by making connections across different fields,” he stated.
