LANSING, Mich. — In a significant boost to Michigan’s economy, Governor Gretchen Whitmer along with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) have announced major business expansions across Hillsdale, Jackson, Berrien, Kalamazoo, and Kent Counties. These expansions are expected to bring over $42.2 million in capital investments and create a minimum of 182 new jobs.
Governor Whitmer highlighted Michigan’s competitive edge in emerging sectors, emphasizing that these expansions will contribute to creating “182 new good-paying jobs,” reinforcing the state’s reputation as a hub for innovation. She stated, “Michigan is on the move and open for business, competing for and winning big projects in next-generation industries like defense and medical manufacturing.”
Matt McCauley, Senior Vice President of Regional Development at MEDC, applauded the strategic expansions led by Vertical Autonomy, R.W. LaPine, and Shoulder Innovations, which are set to strengthen local economies and provide quality employment opportunities.
Vertical Autonomy’s Aerospace Venture
Vertical Autonomy, a leader in unmanned systems, is set to build a centralized manufacturing hub in Jackson County, enhancing its infrastructure in Hillsdale County. This move follows the company’s acquisition of key assets from L3Harris. The initiative is supported by a $455,000 grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund and aims to generate over 70 new jobs, with wages starting at $30 per hour.
The project involves a substantial investment of $28.72 million, which includes over $22 million in machinery and equipment. Vertical Autonomy’s efforts are expected to elevate Michigan’s status in the aerospace and defense sectors, aligning with their mission to innovate in unmanned systems and secure high-value contracts.
Expansion of R.W. LaPine
R.W. LaPine, Inc., a mechanical contracting and HVAC services company, plans a significant expansion in Kalamazoo and Berrien Counties. Supported by a $345,000 grant, the project will result in a $9.5 million investment and the creation of at least 70 jobs, enhancing its capacity in various skilled trades.
The expansion includes an additional 42,000 square feet in Comstock Township and 10,000 square feet in St. Joseph, enabling the company to broaden its market reach and diversify its project portfolio.
Shoulder Innovations’ Growth in Medical Technology
Shoulder Innovations, focusing on shoulder surgical care, is set for expansion in Kent County with a $4.9 million investment. This development will create at least 42 jobs, enhancing their operational capabilities in Byron Township.
Rob Ball, CEO of Shoulder Innovations, expressed gratitude for MEDC’s support, stating, “As a Michigan-born company, we are proud to call the Grand Rapids area home and are committed to investing here.” The project will consolidate their headquarters, providing room for future growth.
