NC Woman Arrested for Fraud, Forgery, and Obtaining Property by False Pretense

Insurance Fraud Charges in North Carolina Highlight Ongoing Battle Against White-Collar Crime

In a significant case of suspected insurance fraud, Melissa Lynn Mountzoures, age 54, from Jonesville, North Carolina, finds herself at the center of a legal storm. The North Carolina Insurance Commissioner, Mike Causey, has confirmed her arrest, with Mountzoures facing multiple felony charges. These include seven counts of insurance fraud, 17 counts each of forgery and uttering a forged instrument, as well as one count of obtaining property by false pretense.

The allegations are severe, accusing Mountzoures of fabricating several fake receipts for non-existent doctor’s appointments. These false documents were allegedly submitted to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina in a bid to claim reimbursements. The offenses reportedly took place over several years, from February 7, 2019, to November 24, 2025, amassing a total of $123,056.27 in fraudulent claims.

Mountzoures surrendered to the Davie County Sheriff’s Office on July 29, and has since been released on a secured bond of $42,000. She is expected to appear in Davie County District Court on August 27 to face the charges. Commissioner Causey has taken this opportunity to remind the public of the broader implications of insurance fraud. “We cannot turn a blind eye to a crime that syphons billions of dollars from taxpayers each year,” he stated. “Insurance fraud must be reported to help hold down future rate increases.”

Residents are strongly encouraged to report any suspicions of insurance fraud, as proactive reporting is critical in combating these financial crimes. The N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division offers the public an avenue to report fraud anonymously by calling 919-807-6840 or toll-free at 888-680-7684.
