Flint Unveils New Public Health Division Aimed at Tailored Community Solutions
In a significant move to tackle the city’s unique public health challenges, Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley has introduced the Division of Health Strategies and Advancement. The announcement, made during a press conference on Wednesday, also included the appointment of Shebra Ward, a seasoned public health leader, as the division’s first director.
The formation of this executive-level division underscores Flint’s dedication to employing data-driven strategies and fostering partnerships to address its public health needs. Given Flint’s status as Genesee County’s largest city with over 85,000 residents, tailored health solutions are crucial. Regional health assessments often overlook the stark disparities within Flint, where life expectancy can differ by nearly 20 years compared to other communities in the county.
Mayor Neeley emphasized the broader scope of public health by stating, “Public health is about far more than healthcare—it is about creating the conditions that allow every resident to live a healthier, longer and more prosperous life. Flint deserves public health strategies built specifically for Flint.”
The new division is set to become Flint’s hub for public health initiatives, focusing on neighborhood-specific health needs through strategic data analysis, research, and policy development. Ward’s role will encompass leading the city’s public health strategy and launching initiatives aimed at enhancing population health, promoting health equity, and strengthening partnerships with various stakeholders, including healthcare providers, educational institutions, and government agencies.
Expressing confidence in Ward’s leadership, Mayor Neeley remarked, “Shebra Ward has helped establish Flint as a national leader in innovative public health initiatives, and I have complete confidence in her ability to lead this new division as we continue building healthier neighborhoods and expanding opportunities for every resident.”
Ward expressed her commitment to her new role by stating, “It is an honor to serve the residents of Flint in this new capacity. Mayor Neeley’s vision recognizes that improving health outcomes requires collaboration, innovation and a deep understanding of the communities we serve. I look forward to working with all of our partners to develop solutions that are focused on creating healthier futures for every Flint neighborhood.”
