Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is extending its educational reach by introducing its nonprofit learning platform, Learnvia, to military colleges. This strategic expansion aims to integrate AI-powered courseware and CMU’s extensive research in learning science into the academic programs of America’s future military leaders.
The inaugural partnership begins with Valley Forge Military College, the only military college in Pennsylvania, with plans to include more military institutions in the upcoming year.
Learnvia, supported by the Gates Foundation, offers free AI-enabled courseware designed to enhance teaching in gateway mathematics courses at the college level. The platform, which complements traditional classroom instruction, includes a blend of lessons, interactive activities, assessments, and an AI tutor, aimed at improving student performance. Currently, Learnvia’s network spans 41 colleges and universities, with ambitions to expand to over 100 by fall 2026.
“America’s competitive advantage depends on preparing the people who will lead,” said CMU President Farnam Jahanian. “By expanding Learnvia to military colleges, we’re extending Carnegie Mellon’s expertise in learning science and artificial intelligence to help educate the next generation of military leaders. Just as importantly, we’re welcoming military colleges into a broader learning collaborative where educators, researchers, and institutions work together to continually improve teaching, courseware, and student success.”
In the U.S., introductory mathematics courses often hinder academic progress for about 30% of students in higher education. Learnvia addresses this issue by focusing on Calculus I and plans to include other critical courses such as Quantitative Reasoning, Pre-Calculus, Calculus II, and Calculus III in the next three years. These subjects are foundational for fields crucial to national interests and are vital for preparing students for the modern workforce.
This initiative aligns with Carnegie Mellon’s broader dedication to enhancing national security through technological and talent advancements. As AI, autonomous systems, and cyber capabilities become key to national defense, equipping future military leaders with the necessary skills in technical disciplines is more crucial than ever.
