Jessica Vanden Berg Appointed Executive Director of OIPD at Drake

Jessica Vanden Berg Takes Helm at Drake University’s Public Democracy Institute

Drake University has named Jessica Vanden Berg as the new Executive Director of the Ron and Jane Olson Institute for Public Democracy (OIPD). With over 25 years of experience in strategy and public affairs, Vanden Berg is set to lead the Institute, focusing on enhancing civic engagement, civil discourse, and democratic revitalization.

This appointment is significant for the OIPD, which was launched in 2023 following a $5 million donation from Ron and Jane Olson. The Olsons’ vision for the Institute included having a dedicated leader to expand its influence both locally and nationally, a role now filled by Vanden Berg.

Drake University President Marty Martin expressed enthusiasm for Vanden Berg’s leadership, saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Jessica Vanden Berg to lead the Olson Institute for Public Democracy. Jessica brings expansive political connections, deep operational expertise, and a strong commitment to nonpartisan civic leadership. She is uniquely equipped to turn the Olsons’ inspiring vision into reality, further advancing Drake’s position as a leader in strengthening American democracy.”

Strategic Vision and Initiatives

An Iowa native, Vanden Berg has previously served as a Chief of Staff in the U.S. House of Representatives and has managed high-profile advocacy campaigns. At OIPD, she plans to enhance current initiatives and programs to promote democratic dialogue and action through diverse public participation and civic leadership.

Vanden Berg emphasized the importance of the Institute’s mission, stating, “When we look at the state of public discourse today, the Institute’s mission to revitalize democracy has never been more important. Every voice matters in our democracy—especially our students and future leaders. We want Drake and the Institute to be a definitive voice on improving the state of our democracy.”

Achievements Under Inaugural Leadership

The Institute has already made significant progress under the guidance of its initial co-executive directors, Professor Rachel Paine Caufield and Scott Raecker. President Martin acknowledged their contributions, noting their dual roles on campus while advancing OIPD’s mission.

  • The Public Democracy Scholars Program: This initiative annually selects five new scholars who receive tuition support, a funded Washington, D.C. policy seminar trip, and professional development for careers in public service.
  • Donna and Darnell Pettengill Civic Leadership Academy: In partnership with the Robert D. and Billie Ray Center, this academy offers high school students a three-day seminar focusing on civic leadership and community service projects.
  • National Civility Summit for Local Government: Since 2023, this summit has gathered local government leaders to tackle complex issues and promote civility. The 2026 summit addressed adaptability amid changing socio-political landscapes.
  • Practitioner-in-Residence: In 2024, OIPD appointed David Young, a former U.S. Congressman, as practitioner-in-residence, enriching student experiences with service projects and seminars.
  • Cooperative Relationships: OIPD has developed partnerships with entities like the Council of State Governments, facilitating collaboration with legislative leaders across North America.

Inspiring Legacy of Ron and Jane Olson

The Institute honors Ron and Jane Olson, whose dedication to democracy is reflected in their careers. Ron Olson, an alumnus of Drake University, made significant contributions to civil rights and law, while Jane Olson has been deeply involved in humanitarian efforts and leadership roles with organizations like Human Rights Watch. Jane is a noted author and speaker, furthering the Institute’s mission through her work.
