Stay Safe During Thunderstorms: Essential Lightning Safety Tips for Wisconsinites
Lightning, a formidable force of nature, can drastically alter lives in a brief moment. ReadyWisconsin is urging residents to understand the dangers of lightning and to act proactively to safeguard themselves and their families.
“Lightning is unpredictable and dangerous,” expressed Greg Engle, Wisconsin Emergency Management administrator. “The good news is lightning-related injuries and deaths are preventable when people know the risks and how to take action during storms.”
As per the National Lightning Safety Council, the United States has witnessed 518 fatal lightning incidents since 2006. In Wisconsin alone, there have been 12 fatalities, with one occurring during April storms in the southeastern part of the state.
To ensure safety during thunderstorms, it is best to seek refuge inside a robust, enclosed structure like a house. Avoid open spaces and bodies of water, including lakes and rivers. Refrain from taking shelter under trees. If inside a vehicle, steer clear of metal surfaces. Structures such as picnic shelters, dugouts, tents, open garages, and covered patios are not reliable against lightning strikes.
When engaging in outdoor activities, remain vigilant about the weather forecast. If thunderstorms are predicted, outline a plan for seeking shelter if lightning is sighted nearby. Identify safe shelters in advance or decide on leaving the area if no shelter is available. Adhere to the 30-30 rule: if the interval between seeing lightning and hearing thunder is 30 seconds or less, seek shelter promptly. Remain indoors for at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before venturing outside again.
Even indoors, precautions are necessary during a thunderstorm. Avoid contact with electrical outlets, water, or plumbing. Keep a safe distance from windows and doors.
If lightning strikes a person, contact 911 immediately. If trained, administer CPR. It is safe to touch the victim as the human body does not retain an electrical charge.
