Villanova hosts migration symposium in Canary Islands with global leaders

International Symposium on Migration to be Held in Canary Islands Amidst Pope’s Visit

TENERIFE, SPAIN (May 20, 2026) — The Canary Islands are set to become a focal point for global discussions on migration as Villanova University hosts an international symposium at the Universidad de La Laguna from June 11-14. Coinciding with the visit of Pope Leo XIV, this event aims to transform theoretical dialogue into actionable strategies, gathering experts and stakeholders from various sectors.

This symposium, organized by Villanova’s Mother Cabrini Institute on Immigration, is part of the larger initiative Refugees & Migrants in Our Common Home. The initiative seeks to mobilize academic and community resources globally, focusing on collaboration for the welfare of migrants and refugees.

The Canary Islands, known as the deadliest migration route from West Africa to Europe, provide a significant backdrop for this gathering. The symposium builds on the momentum of an earlier event held in Rome in October 2025, where participants had an audience with Pope Leo XIV, highlighting the global and moral importance of the cause.

Professor Michele Pistone, Faculty Director of the Mother Cabrini Institute, emphasized the need to move beyond discussions. “This is a moment to move from principles to practice,” she stated, underlining the event’s focus on fostering collaboration among academics, practitioners, and migrants.

The symposium will feature field visits, working groups, and presentations, engaging around 65 participants. The aim is to develop Action Plans in teaching, research, advocacy, and service, thereby providing a structured approach to addressing migration issues.

Keynote speakers on June 13 will include Professor Michele Pistone, Dr. Francisco J. García Rodríguez, Bishop Eloy A. Santiago, the Rev. John J. Lydon, OSA, and Ousman Umar. The day will offer panel discussions and sessions dedicated to exploring the social teachings of Pope Leo XIV on migration, culminating in collaborative working groups and a final reception.

The event concludes on June 14 with a Mass at the Cathedral of La Laguna, drawing together the insights and commitments made during the symposium.
