Major Construction Continues on Complete 540 Project in North Carolina
RALEIGH – Significant progress is being made on the Complete 540 Project, as efforts to extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from N.C. 55 Bypass to Interstate 40 continue to unfold. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has announced a series of road closures to facilitate this development.
From 9:00 p.m. on July 12 until 5:00 a.m. on July 14, U.S. 401 will be temporarily closed to all traffic between Donny Brook Road and W. Allen Street. However, local access south of Ten Ten Road will remain available during this period. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if feasible, and those who must travel are advised to follow the designated detour signs.
To navigate north of the U.S. 401 closure, drivers should adhere to this route:
- Head north on U.S. 401
- Turn left onto Donny Brook Road
- Turn right onto Lake Wheeler Road
- Turn right onto Ten Ten Road
- Turn left onto U.S. 401
For access to U.S. 401 south of the closed section, the following detour is recommended:
- Head south on U.S. 401
- Turn right onto Ten Ten Road
- Turn left onto Lake Wheeler Road
- Turn left onto Donny Brook Road
- Turn right onto U.S. 401
Subsequent to this closure, Donny Brook Road at its junction with U.S. 401 will also experience a temporary closure from 5:00 a.m. on July 14 to 5:00 a.m. on July 15. Motorists are again encouraged to avoid this area when possible and to follow detour signage if travel is necessary.
To reach Donny Brook Road west of the closure point, drivers should follow this detour:
- Proceed north on U.S. 401
- Turn left onto Ten Ten Road
- Turn left onto Lake Wheeler Road
- Turn left onto Donny Brook Road
This series of road closures and detours has been organized in coordination with Wake Technical Community College Southern Wake Campus to ensure minimal disruption during construction activities. It is important to note that these closures are subject to weather conditions, and road closure signs will be displayed accordingly. Drivers should anticipate potential delays and exercise caution in the construction zone.
