BorgWarner Expands in Henderson County, Bringing Jobs and Economic Growth
BorgWarner Inc., a leader in sustainable mobility solutions, is set to create 378 new jobs in Henderson County, North Carolina. The company announced a $100 million investment aimed at expanding its Hendersonville operations to manufacture critical components for its global business growth.
Governor Josh Stein highlighted the significance of this expansion, stating, “This decision to reinvest in our state underscores the advantages of investing in western North Carolina. Thanks to our manufacturing economy and our world-class workforce, North Carolina remains the best place to do business.”
With over a century of innovation, BorgWarner serves every major global automotive OEM, employing 37,500 people across 81 facilities worldwide. The Hendersonville site will gain an additional 140,000 square feet to support its growing production needs.
Joseph F. Fadool, President and CEO of BorgWarner Inc., expressed gratitude for the support received: “We appreciate the grant and continued support from the state of North Carolina to expand our manufacturing footprint here in the United States.”
N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley emphasized the broader impact of such investments, noting, “Advanced manufacturers are important to our growing supply chain, and we are committed to making sure the largest manufacturing workforce in the Southeast is also highly skilled and resilient for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
The new positions at BorgWarner will encompass a variety of roles, including technicians, logistics personnel, and production staff. The average salary for these roles will be $67,047, significantly higher than the county’s average of $54,118, potentially generating an annual payroll impact exceeding $25.3 million.
Facilitated by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), this expansion is projected to bolster North Carolina’s economy by $1 billion over 12 years. The JDIG agreement allows for potential reimbursements of up to $3,685,500, contingent on the company achieving its job creation and investment targets.
The investment’s projected return on public dollars is 88 percent, meaning the state gains $1.88 in revenue for every dollar spent. JDIG projects like this are designed to ensure positive net tax revenue for the state.
As Henderson County is classified as Tier 2 under the state’s economic tier system, up to $409,500 from the JDIG agreement will support the state’s Industrial Development Fund – Utility Account, aiding rural infrastructure improvements.
Senator Timothy D. Moffitt remarked on the expansion’s significance: “This expansion is a strong vote of confidence for our region, and we appreciate the innovation and economic competitiveness that this company adds to our community.”
Representative Jake Johnson added, “This additional $100 million investment is more than money. It’s a commitment to the people of Henderson County.”
The project is supported by numerous partners, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, the North Carolina General Assembly, and various local and educational institutions.
