The Free Library of Philadelphia is experiencing a remarkable transformation. Under the leadership of the Parker administration, the library system has seen an impressive rise in patron visits, resource usage, and program participation. This growth is more than mere statistics; it’s about fostering a reading and learning culture, providing community connections, and offering essential aid to Philadelphians.
Boosting Staff and Services
With increased funding from the City, the Free Library has welcomed over 300 new staff members. These additional team members play vital roles throughout the library system, from program facilitation and patron assistance to collection management and building maintenance. This staffing boost has allowed for extended operating hours, restored Saturday services, and reduced unexpected closures, making the library more accessible to families, students, job seekers, and other community members.
Significant Uptick in Resource Utilization
The period from fiscal year 2024 to 2026 saw a substantial increase in the borrowing of library materials:
- Total checkouts surged by 55 percent, from 5.77 million to 8.93 million.
- Digital checkouts experienced a 75 percent rise, reaching 6.64 million from a previous 3.79 million.
- Checkouts of physical materials increased 15 percent, from 1.99 million to 2.29 million.
- Wi-Fi sessions climbed 71 percent, from 2.16 million to 3.69 million.
- The number of new library cardholders grew by 18 percent, from 89,775 in 2024 to 106,024 in 2026.
Growing Engagement with Library Programs
Library programs have seen a surge in participation, particularly among children and families. LEAP afterschool program attendance increased by 54 percent, preschool program attendance rose by 20 percent, and school visit participation grew by 23 percent. In fiscal year 2026, the Free Library offered 31,247 programs—an increase of 24 percent from two years prior—with a total attendance of 578,877.
Adults are also benefiting from the library’s offerings. Programs for GED, adult basic education, and English language learning have increased by 89 percent, with attendance climbing 67 percent. These programs support the library’s mission to create economic opportunities by helping residents acquire job skills, navigate technology, and seek employment.
Enhancing Library Infrastructure
The City and Library are investing in significant upgrades to neighborhood library buildings. These enhancements aim to improve heating, cooling, safety, and access, creating more comfortable and welcoming environments. Several libraries have already received updates, with more planned in the future.
Charting the Future
The Free Library and the Free Library Foundation are in the process of developing a new strategic plan. Input from staff, patrons, community members, and partners, gathered through surveys and discussions, is crucial in setting the library’s future goals. The plan, expected to be unveiled in spring 2027, will build on current progress and guide the library’s future endeavors.
The momentum is strong, but the journey continues. Residents are encouraged to visit their local library, obtain a library card, participate in programs, explore digital resources, and share these opportunities with others. Join the growing movement of individuals discovering community, curiosity, and culture at the Free Library, and contribute to the ongoing momentum.
