North Carolina’s New Budget Boosts Pay for Public Safety Officers
In a move to fortify North Carolina’s public safety workforce, a recent state budget has introduced substantial salary increases for law enforcement personnel. This initiative aims to recruit and retain skilled officers by offering competitive compensation packages.
Last month, Governor Stein officially signed into law the first comprehensive state budget in over two years. This landmark budget includes notable pay raises for various public safety roles: State Highway Patrol officers will see a 15% increase, State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) officers will receive a 16.2% boost, correctional officers are set for a 13% raise, and probation and parole officers will get a 6.5% increase. Additionally, the budget allocates nearly $40 million for a one-time $1,750 bonus for sworn local law enforcement officers.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol Colonel Freddy Johnson Jr. emphasized the importance of these measures in a recent op-ed, stating that the budget is a critical step towards equipping officers with the necessary resources to maintain safety across North Carolina’s 80,000 miles of roadways. He noted that while the budget is a significant advancement, it is not the ultimate solution. “When it comes to compensation, we should aspire to be among our nation’s leaders, not its laggards,” Johnson wrote, underscoring the goal to elevate North Carolina’s standing in law enforcement compensation.
