Virtual Waiting Options
DMV customers can now have a restaurant-like experience, where you sign in upon arrival, leave your phone number, and receive alerts when your turn is approaching. This allows you to wait from anywhere and make better use of your time.
Go Paperless
The NCDMV now offers the convenience of uploading necessary documents directly from your phone. This means you can submit insurance papers, proof-of-address, and teen driver logs electronically, eliminating the need for printed documents. However, note that original identity documents such as birth certificates and Social Security cards must still be presented physically.
Take Advantage of Online Services

Recent initiatives have significantly reduced wait times at the DMV, with average waits down to 23 minutes, an 87% decrease since spring 2025. Governor Josh Stein acknowledges the collaborative effort that has driven these improvements, saying, “I thank team DMV for its hard work, Commissioner Tine for his leadership, and the General Assembly for its partnership in making these results possible.”
Continuous enhancements are on the horizon as NCDMV extends appointment availability, speeds up transactions, and enhances online services. The Governor’s budget proposal for 2026-27 includes funding for additional staff and new offices, aiming to align DMV services with the state’s growth.
