NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The latest environmental report for 2024 from the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) has just been made public, offering insights into the site’s efforts to maintain and protect the environment. The comprehensive report is available online for public access.
The 2024 Environmental Report from the NNSS details the environmental monitoring and compliance activities undertaken throughout the year. The report focuses on the various measures implemented to safeguard both the environment and the public amid the site’s operations.
“The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nevada Field Office (NFO) presents this environmental report to summarize actions taken in 2024 to protect the environment and the public while achieving our mission goals,” stated NNSA/NFO Manager Betty Huck. “This report is a key component in our efforts to keep the public informed of environmental conditions at the NNSS and its associated facilities in Las Vegas.”
Key areas covered in the report include environmental compliance and stewardship, monitoring of radiological elements in groundwater and air, protection of endangered species, cultural resource management, and community outreach efforts.
Ensuring National Security and Environmental Stewardship
Beyond environmental monitoring, the NNSS plays a crucial role in national security by supporting the nation’s nuclear deterrent and providing emergency response capabilities for radiological incidents. The site also contributes to arms control and nonproliferation initiatives, collaborates on national security tasks with various federal agencies, and manages long-term environmental stewardship related to its Cold War history.
Managed by Mission Support and Test Services LLC (MSTS), the NNSS is a collaborative effort between Honeywell International Inc., Amentum, and HII Nuclear. Oversight is provided by the NNSA’s Nevada Field Office, located in North Las Vegas, ensuring that operations remain both government-controlled and contractor-operated.
