Five years have passed since the tragic events at the Capitol, which resulted in the death of one law enforcement officer and injuries to 140 police officers. These officers were defending the Capitol, its Members of Congress, and staff during a violent insurrection.
In the ensuing years, Donald Trump has not shied away from sharing controversial views. He has yet to condemn political violence and has propagated conspiracy theories regarding the assassination of a Democratic lawmaker. Trump has controversially labeled January 6th as a “day of love” and praised the insurrectionists as “great people.” On his first day in office, Trump granted pardons to over 1,500 involved in the riots, including many convicted of assaulting law enforcement officers. Since then, numerous pardoned individuals have committed further serious offenses.
In Nevada, Joe Lombardo, who emphasized his law enforcement background during his gubernatorial campaign, has remained silent on the pardoning of these violent rioters. While other Republicans and law enforcement groups have publicly criticized Trump for these pardons, Lombardo has not joined in the condemnation. Moreover, he has twice vetoed bills aimed at criminalizing fake elector schemes, similar to those at the heart of the January 6th events.

Despite the attempts to overturn the democratic will of the American people, the January 6th insurrection failed because of the remarkable heroism and bravery of U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement entities. Trump has since gone on to pardon hundreds of the rioters who were convicted of assaulting those law enforcement officers, something that Joe Lombardo – a former law enforcement officer himself – shamelessly refuses to condemn. While Trump and Republicans continue to lie about the 2020 election and what happened on January 6th, Nevada Democrats will continue to stand up for truth, justice, and our sacred right to vote.”
