Celebrating the Contributions of NNSS Interns on National Intern Day
In honor of National Intern Day, we recognize the invaluable contributions of interns at the Nevada National Security Sites (NNSS) who have dedicated their summer to gaining practical experience. Through the 2026 Student Programs, these interns have been instrumental in supporting the NNSS mission.
Join us as we explore the experiences and achievements of our dedicated interns over the summer.
Jessica | Enterprise Risk Management
Jessica, a U.S. Navy veteran and current student at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas, is advancing her career in insurance and risk management. Serving as a student board member for the Nevada Chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society, she developed a specialized AI prompt to aid risk integrators in quickly drafting and refining risk descriptions. She also conducted audits of individual risks and shared her findings, training staff to utilize AI for more efficient workflows.
Steven | Electrical Engineering
Steven, currently in his first year as an NNSS intern, is pursuing a degree in biomedical and electrical engineering at the University of Nevada – Reno. He aspires to continue his internship with the Department of Energy (DOE) next summer and aims to build a career as a research and development engineer in defense or bioinstrumentation.
Todd | Strategic Operations and Response Support (SOARS)
A returning intern in the Student Program, Todd has showcased a strong commitment to national safety. After interning with Human Resources in 2025, he returned to contribute to the development of Continuity of Operations within SOARS. He recently completed his degree in homeland security and emergency management and is set to commence a graduate program in emergency management at the University at Albany – State University of New York.
Alex | Global Communications
After 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, Alex is transitioning to civilian life by participating in the 2026 Student Program as a Hiring Our Heroes fellow. This opportunity is helping him gain confidence in leveraging his military experience for a civilian career.
Abigail | Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation
Engaged in advanced research, Abigail is a PhD candidate at Michigan State University. Her summer was dedicated to integrating 3D velocity models into earthquake relocation processes and establishing workflows for generating earthquake focal mechanisms daily. These developments enhance the understanding of fault geometry and motion at Rock Valley within the NNSS.
