ELY, Nev. — Residents of Ely and surrounding areas have the opportunity to secure a winter supply of firewood through the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District’s latest offering. Priced at $85 per cord, the permits for mixed pinyon-juniper firewood can be obtained at the BLM Ely District Office, located at 702 North Industrial Way. Sales will commence from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M. on Monday, Sept. 28.
The firewood, part of a larger effort by the BLM, was harvested during a major hazardous fuels reduction project. This initiative aims to safeguard people and properties from wildfires while enhancing vegetative health and wildlife habitats. “The project restores vegetative health and improves wildlife habitat while reducing catastrophic wildfire risk on public lands,” noted Kellie Dobrescu, U.S. Wildland Fire Service Unit 9 forester.
Firewood is available in rounds measuring approximately 12 to 16 inches long and 3 to 25 inches in diameter. These are conveniently stacked in one- to two-cord piles along accessible two-track roads. Precise pickup locations will be disclosed upon purchasing the permits.
Purchasers are permitted to buy up to five cords and must handle the loading and transportation of the firewood themselves. The designated period for firewood collection spans from Oct. 4-10, from noon to 6 p.m. each day.
During the permit acquisition process, buyers must select a specific pickup date and furnish details about their vehicles, including color, make, and trailer specifications if applicable.
