BLM Approves Washoe County Stormwater Project in Lemmon Valley, NV

Washoe County to Tackle Flooding with New Stormwater Facility in Lemmon Valley

In a move aimed at mitigating persistent flooding challenges, the Bureau of Land Management’s Sierra Front Field Office has greenlit Washoe County’s plans to build and maintain a stormwater catchment facility on BLM-administered lands. This site is located north of the Heppner Subdivision in Lemmon Valley, Nevada.

The project includes the development of a runoff interceptor trench, two stormwater catchment basins, outlet structures, a maintenance access road, and livestock exclusion fencing, among other stormwater management components. The initiative, analyzed under an Environmental Assessment, targets ongoing issues such as flooding, sediment displacement, and drainage problems that have been affecting local residents.

The approved right-of-way (ROW) spans approximately 13 acres for long-term use, with an additional 37.5 acres allocated for temporary use during the construction phase. Washoe County will adhere to all approved design features and Best Management Practices, and it will be responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the facility. Areas disturbed temporarily during construction will be reclaimed and replanted once the project is completed.
