BLM Approves Geotechnical Surveys for Proposed Energy Project in Lyon County
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has recently greenlit a series of geotechnical site investigations by Pine Nut Energy Center LLC on public lands managed by the BLM near Wabuska in Lyon County, Nevada. This decision marks a significant step in assessing the potential for developing an energy storage facility in the area.
The scope of the approved activities encompasses a variety of tests designed to evaluate the site’s soil and foundation conditions. These include subsurface borings, cone penetrometer tests, small test pits, and electrical-resistivity and other geophysical surveys. Additionally, pile-load tests will be conducted to further assess feasibility. The investigations are designed to minimize environmental impact by utilizing existing roads or designated pathways and steering clear of sensitive biological and cultural resources. The operations are expected to temporarily affect about 7.04 acres, with all areas to be restored following the completion of fieldwork.
To safeguard the environment, the BLM has mandated several protective measures. These include resource clearances, restrictions on activities during bird nesting periods, dust and erosion control measures, prevention of invasive species, waste management protocols, and comprehensive site reclamation. The environmental assessment concluded that these site investigations qualify for a categorical exclusion, indicating that the temporary disruptions will not lead to significant environmental impacts. These investigations aim to gather crucial subsurface and hydrologic data for the proposed Pine Nut Energy Center project.
