CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has sanctioned a new strategy for managing the wild horse population in the North Complex area, which includes the Flanigan, Dogskin Mountains, and Granite Peak Herd Management Areas.
Spanning approximately 27,671 acres, the North Complex, along with surrounding lands, covers a total of about 314,145 acres in Washoe County, roughly 30 miles north of Carson City.
As of March 1st, 2026, BLM has assessed the wild horse population in this region to be around 369. The goal is to reduce this number to align with the targeted management level of 101-157 wild horses.
The BLM emphasizes that the gathering process will prioritize the safety and humane treatment of the horses during the operation.
