BLM Approves Lemmon Drive Realignment to Mitigate Flood Risks

Major Infrastructure Overhaul Near Swan Lake Approved

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has granted approval for a significant infrastructure project in Lemmon Valley, Nevada, addressing concerns about flood resilience and transportation efficiency. The Sierra Front Field Office has released a decision record for a categorical exclusion, allowing the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County to proceed with revamping approximately 2.5 miles of Lemmon Drive.

Spanning 3,720 feet of land managed by the BLM, the realignment and reconstruction project will elevate the roadway to ensure it stays above the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 100-year base flood elevation. The newly designed roadway will be positioned to the west of the current alignment, featuring a 52-foot section that includes a travel lane in each direction, a center median, shoulders, and designated turn pockets. Additionally, a 10-foot shared-use path will be constructed to accommodate both pedestrian and cycling traffic.

The project, known as the Build Alternative, was thoroughly analyzed in the Environmental Assessment (FHWA‑NV‑EA 25‑02). It incorporates comprehensive design elements aimed at preserving existing drainage patterns, mitigating flood risks, safeguarding biological resources, and minimizing environmental impacts such as dust and stormwater runoff. The environmental reviews concluded that the development would not lead to significant adverse effects.

For those interested in more detailed information, the Decision Record, including the Environmental Assessment and Categorical Exclusion review, is accessible online. Visit the Lemmon Drive Road Realignment Project page for further insights.
