Winnemucca, Nev. – As the annual Burning Man event approaches, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced a temporary closure of portions of the Black Rock Desert playa. This decision, effective from July 30 through October 10, 2026, aims to safeguard public resources, enhance safety measures, and allow for coordinated enforcement efforts between BLM, state, and local authorities.
Phased Closure Details
The closure will occur in two distinct phases:
- Phase 1: From July 30 to October 10, 2026, approximately 10,185 acres, representing less than 3% of the playa, will be closed.
- Phase 2: Beginning on August 24 and concluding on September 11, 2026, around 51,149 acres, which accounts for 33% of the playa, will be inaccessible.
Despite these restrictions, significant portions of the Black Rock Desert playa will remain accessible for recreational activities, with the East and West Playa Highways open for through traffic.

To aid visitors, the Black Rock Field Office has installed signage and distributed maps outlining the restrictions.
