More Michigan Families to Benefit from Expanded Child Care Program
Access to quality child care is a significant concern for many working families, often seeming like an unattainable goal. However, recent developments in Michigan aim to ease this burden. The MI Tri-Share Child Care Program has expanded, offering more families the chance to receive financial assistance.
Understanding the MI Tri-Share Program
The MI Tri-Share Child Care Program is an innovative initiative where the costs of licensed child care are evenly divided among the State of Michigan, participating employers, and employees. This collaborative approach aims to provide more affordable child care solutions while also boosting Michigan’s workforce and supporting local child care providers.
Eligibility Criteria and Changes
As of May 1, families with incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level, which is about $128,600 annually for a family of four, can now qualify for the program. However, this is contingent upon their employer’s participation in MI Tri-Share.
Employer Participation is Key
For employees to benefit from the Tri-Share program, their employers must be enrolled. It’s crucial for families to initiate discussions at their workplaces. Many employers recognize the program’s value as it aids in employee retention and recruitment.
How to Get Involved
Residents or workers in Livingston County can turn to Child Care Network, the regional hub for Tri-Share, for guidance. While they don’t enroll individual families, they facilitate communication with employers to help them join the program.
Families should discuss Tri-Share with their human resources departments or supervisors. Employers can access detailed information and support by visiting www.childcarenetwork.org/trishare.
Statewide Impact and Future Prospects
The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) has broadened the MI Tri-Share program, allowing more families to benefit. Since its inception in 2021, the program has expanded from three regions to encompass all Michigan counties. As a result, over 250 employers are participating, aiding more than 800 families and nearly 1,000 children, with total family savings surpassing $8.6 million.
Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, MiLEAP director, emphasized the program’s role in reducing child care costs for families and aiding employers in talent management. “At MiLEAP, our mission is to expand access to opportunity for every Michigander and that starts with supporting working families and advancing workforce development,” she stated.
Employer Testimonials
Kenyatta Brame, executive vice president of Cascade Engineering, highlighted the program’s importance in workforce development, saying, “We offer good-paying, meaningful jobs, but without access to reliable childcare, many qualified individuals are unable to take advantage of these opportunities. The Tri-Share initiative is an investment designed to break down that barrier.”
