Flint’s Juneteenth Celebrations Promise a Weekend of Festivities and Reflection
Flint is set to host a vibrant celebration of Juneteenth this year, inviting both locals and visitors to partake in a series of events downtown on Friday, June 19. The highlight of the evening will be the city’s much-anticipated annual fireworks display, marking this significant occasion with a spectacular show.
The downtown festivities will be centered around the Flat Lot, where food trucks, vendors, and a range of family-friendly activities will create a lively atmosphere. The community is encouraged to come together to honor Juneteenth, celebrating themes of freedom, unity, and resilience.
The day will culminate with Flint’s annual Juneteenth fireworks, which will illuminate the downtown skyline at dusk, offering a visual celebration for all to enjoy.
“Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate our progress and reaffirm our commitment to building a stronger future together,” stated Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “We invite residents from across the region to join us downtown as we celebrate freedom, culture and community.”
Beyond the downtown events, Flint will host various Juneteenth activities throughout the weekend. The 54th Annual Traditional Flint Juneteenth Celebration is organized by the Traditional Flint Juneteenth Celebration Committee and will take place on Friday, June 19, from noon to 5 p.m. at Max Brandon Park, 3606 Dupont St. This event will include family activities, community engagement opportunities, and a parade starting at 5 p.m.
Later on Friday, an Afrobeats Party is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the University of Michigan Community Park, located behind the William S. White Building at Fifth Avenue and James B. Cole Boulevard.
Juneteenth festivities will extend into Saturday, June 20, with the Juneteenth @ Cultural Center Celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium, 1221 E. Kearsley St. This event will offer educational programming, cultural exhibits, performances, and activities focused on African American history and culture.
Juneteenth marks the day on June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, it is celebrated as a recognition of freedom, perseverance, and the significant contributions of African Americans to communities nationwide.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the downtown celebrations and explore various Juneteenth events throughout Flint during the holiday weekend.
