Historic Appointment: Yael Grushka-Cockayne to Lead UVA’s Darden School of Business
The University of Virginia has announced a groundbreaking appointment at the Darden School of Business. For the first time in its 70-year history, the school will be led by a woman. Yael Grushka-Cockayne, a distinguished professor and academic leader, will assume the role of dean beginning August 1.
Grushka-Cockayne, who holds the title of Landmark Communications Professor of Business Administration, has been an influential figure at Darden. Alongside her current role as vice dean, she serves as senior associate dean for the Full-Time MBA program and is the academic co-director of the LaCross Institute for Ethical Artificial Intelligence in Business. Her expertise extends to the UVA School of Data Science where she is a professor of data science.
Expressing her enthusiasm for her new role, Grushka-Cockayne highlighted the unique strengths of the Darden School. “Darden’s strength has always been its people and the deeply human approach to business education: rigorous, student-centered, grounded in discussion, community, and committed to developing responsible leaders who are prepared to make a positive impact in the world,” she stated. This opportunity arises at a pivotal time, as she brings her knowledge in artificial intelligence to the forefront of business education.
The current dean, Scott Beardsley, who transitioned to the role of University president, praised Grushka-Cockayne’s appointment, noting, “Yael is exactly the kind of leader this moment calls for. She believes deeply in Darden’s student-centered learning model and understands how business education must evolve in a world shaped by data, artificial intelligence and global complexity.”
Grushka-Cockayne is celebrated for her engaging teaching style, having instructed students across various Darden MBA formats, including decision analysis and project management. Her research interests include forecasting, project planning, and the use of machine learning in organizations. Her work has been featured in top business journals.
Her academic journey also includes roles at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School and New York University’s Stern School of Business. Her scholarly achievements have been recognized by UVA’s interim executive vice president and provost, Brie Gertler, who remarked, “Yael is an exceptional scholar, teacher and academic leader whose career reflects the very best of Darden and the University.”
Grushka-Cockayne’s educational background is equally impressive, with degrees from London Business School, London School of Economics and Political Science, and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
The Darden School is poised for continued success, having recently concluded a $632 million capital campaign, solidifying its status as a top public business school. John Fowler, chair of the Darden School Foundation Board of Trustees, expressed confidence in Grushka-Cockayne’s leadership to further the school’s esteemed position.
During the interim period, Mike Lenox, known for his expertise in innovation and business strategy, ensured the school maintained its momentum. He applauded the alignment of Grushka-Cockayne’s leadership with Darden’s core strengths.
As the Darden School looks forward to this new chapter under Grushka-Cockayne’s leadership, the collective efforts of faculty and staff are anticipated to propel the institution’s mission forward in a world increasingly influenced by technology and data.
