University of Virginia’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies Embraces New Beginnings
The University of Virginia (UVA) is witnessing significant developments as the School of Continuing and Professional Studies prepares for transformative changes. This institution, which serves adult learners and professionals seeking further education, is relocating to a new facility at Sycamore Hill, a property formerly known as the Federal Executive Institute.
Additionally, the school has expanded its academic offerings with the introduction of a Master’s degree in Change Management. This marks a significant addition to their graduate programs, previously limited to a Master of Public Safety, which has seen over 500 graduates since its inception in 2020.
Dean Melissa Lubin shared insights into these changes and their impact on the school’s future.

Dean Lubin emphasized the broad applicability of the new Master of Change Management degree, stating, “The amazing thing about this degree is that it transcends industries and roles, so nearly everyone can benefit from this degree.” She highlighted the increasing demand for such skills due to rapid societal changes, including advancements in artificial intelligence and the evolution of workforce structures.
This program is particularly tailored for mid- to senior-level managers, the decision-makers who play a critical role in driving organizational change.

The move to Sycamore Hill presents new opportunities for the school. Dean Lubin noted that the location supports Thomas Jefferson’s vision of lifelong learning by providing a residential learning environment for adult students. The facility will also enhance the school’s ability to offer diverse learning experiences, from traditional in-person classes to hybrid and immersive formats.

Addressing the challenge of maintaining a sense of community for online learners, Lubin explained, “We know that fostering a sense of community for our online students is critical to their experience and to their success.” Faculty play a vital role in connecting students within virtual classrooms, while the school offers events in various locations to engage students and alumni.
