In a significant shift at the University of Virginia, President Scott Beardsley has announced his decision to step down from his role as chair of the provost search committee. This change comes as Beardsley takes on new duties and responsibilities in his position as president.
Taking over the leadership of the search committee is Stephanie Rowley, who holds the title of William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Education and serves as the dean of the School of Education and Human Development. Rowley will lead the committee through the remainder of the search process.
The provost position, a critical role as the chief academic officer at the University, has been vacant since Ian Baucom transitioned to become the president of Middlebury College in Vermont back in spring 2025. During this interim period, Brie Gertler, who was the vice provost, has been fulfilling the responsibilities of the provost.
President Beardsley has indicated that the search committee will soon see an expansion in its membership, with the intention of appointing a new provost by March.
The University continues to welcome nominations for its next provost. Opportunities for applications and feedback are available on the search website.
