When a band of University of Virginia graduates chose their name, it sparked curiosity and eyebrows were raised. The name choice left many questioning its implications.
“That was exactly my parents’ first concern with it,” noted Bonde. “I remember my mom saying, ‘People are going to think you’re calling yourself a bimbo.’ I was like, ‘It’s ironic, Mom.’”
Like many musical groups, the band experienced lineup changes over time. In 2019, they welcomed Peter Cybriskwy, a fellow UVA alumnus, as their drummer and affectionately referred to him as a “himbo.” The band, a quintet by then, performed extensively in New York throughout 2025. However, in December of that year, Gallivan relocated to California.
During this period, in Massachusetts, Colleen Bonde’s health was deteriorating.
‘That song’s very special’
Colleen Bonde dedicated over three decades to working as a pediatric speech therapist and was known for her selfless kindness, never expecting anything in return, as her daughter Sarah recalled. Allen Bonde described his wife as “tough, wickedly funny and didn’t let her illness slow her down.” The couple even managed to visit London in 2025, a city Colleen cherished.
By April, when Sarah completed the song “Southern Sky,” Colleen had entered hospice care. Sarah shared the completed track with her mother by playing it from her phone while sitting beside her. Although uncertain of her mother’s comprehension, Sarah felt assured, saying, “but she heard it, and that’s good.”
