UVA Initiates Search for New Provost with Diverse Committee
The University of Virginia has officially launched the search for its next executive vice president and provost, with a 12-member committee tasked with finding the right candidate for the institution’s top academic position. This committee, representing a wide array of the university community, will evaluate and recommend both internal and external potential candidates.
In July, UVA President Scott Beardsley selected Gregory Fairchild, the Dean and CEO of UVA Northern Virginia, to chair the committee. Together, they selected nine additional members to join the committee, while the UVA Board of Visitors appointed two members, maintaining their traditional involvement in such appointments.
“The committee includes a broad sampling of community members, ranging from students to alumni, faculty and the Board of Visitors, professors from across schools and levels, and key administrative leaders,” Fairchild expressed. “All of these voices are important to our search process, as all are key stakeholders who influence and are influenced by our provost.”
Alongside Fairchild, the committee members are:
- Michael Bisceglia, member, Board of Visitors
- Maïté Brandt-Pearce, vice provost for faculty affairs
- Carlos Brown, rector, Board of Visitors
- Jennifer “J.J.” Wagner Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer
- Dr. Kirsten Greene, chair of the UVA Department of Urology and Paul Mellon Professor
- Michael Kennedy, professor of education
- Mark Luellen, senior vice president for external relations
- Mariam Parray, fourth-year student and Jefferson Scholar and Echols Scholar
- Vivian Riefberg, Walentas Jefferson Scholars Foundation Professorship Chair
- Dr. Mitch Rosner, UVA Health CEO and executive vice president for health affairs
- Brad Wilcox, University Professor, Department of Sociology
The committee’s introductory meeting was held on Tuesday, where President Beardsley conveyed his gratitude to the members for their commitment to this crucial task. He emphasized the importance of selecting a visionary leader as UVA embarks on a new strategic planning process to guide the university’s future development. The search process will remain confidential until a candidate is chosen.
