In bustling urban environments, the air you breathe may carry more than just the usual pollutants. It might also include metals from various sources such as automobile emissions, construction debris, or residual pesticides from bygone eras.
A recent study featured in the Environmental Science and Pollution Research journal explores the composition of road dust in several eastern U.S. cities. Conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia, the study aimed to determine the potential health risks posed by these metals to urban residents.
Robin Truong, the study’s lead researcher and a third-year doctoral student at UVA, explained the focus of their work: “Our lab specializes in analyzing the elemental profile of environmental samples, which can tell you about the history of a city.” Truong noted that Richmond, with its legacy of coal-fired power plants and a waste incineration facility, revealed trace amounts of lead in its road dust.
The research team collected dust from numerous sites in each city, specifically targeting public areas like parks, schools, and downtown zones where people frequently gather. The analysis showed that toxic metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium, were present in one-third of the samples.
“These dust samples are not from the middle of the highway,” clarified Justin Richardson, a co-author and environmental sciences professor at UVA. “They were collected at public spaces, such as parks, schools and downtown areas where residents are likely to be exposed.” Richardson also serves as Truong’s faculty adviser and heads the Soil Biogeochemistry Lab, which focuses on trace metal and element analysis.
Chattan Haselden, a co-author who recently graduated from UVA with a bachelor’s in environmental sciences, contributed to the fieldwork as part of his senior thesis. The study highlighted regional variations in road dust across the cities examined, reflecting their distinct historical developments.
Cities in the Northeast, like Trenton, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware, which have deep-rooted industrial pasts, exhibited higher metal concentrations. In contrast, in Charleston, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia, historical pesticide application and port operations were more influential.
It is important to note that the Environmental Protection Agency does not monitor road dust pollution. While the Clean Air Act and its amendments address six air pollutants, including particulate matter and lead, road dust and the other 11 metals studied are not covered.
