Scott C. Beardsley Named 10th President of University of Virginia

The University of Virginia is preparing for a new chapter in its storied history with the appointment of Scott C. Beardsley as its 10th president. This announcement comes after an extensive search process that spanned five months and included input from various stakeholders within the UVA community.

Selection Process and Community Engagement

The decision to appoint Beardsley was made by the Board of Visitors, following a rigorous search conducted by the Special Committee on the Nomination of a President. The committee’s efforts drew significant interest globally, with over 100 nominations considered. Ultimately, 27 candidates were reviewed, with a focus on selecting a leader capable of guiding the institution through transitional times while upholding its core values.

Beardsley’s Qualifications and Contributions

Beardsley brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He is currently the David M. LaCross Dean of the Darden School of Business and the Charles C. Abbott Professor of Business Administration. Under his leadership, the Darden School has achieved high academic rankings, increased student access, and secured substantial philanthropic contributions. His initiatives have included major capital projects, such as those for UVA Northern Virginia, and efforts to enhance faculty recruitment and retention.

Before his academic career, Beardsley spent 26 years at McKinsey & Company, where he rose to the position of senior partner and was involved in global learning and leadership development. This experience has equipped him with the skills necessary to lead and foster talent in complex environments, skills that he has successfully translated into the academic sphere over the past decade.

Board’s Confidence and Future Outlook

The Board of Visitors unanimously voted in favor of Beardsley’s appointment, expressing confidence in his leadership and vision for the university. “Scott’s leadership, vision, and commitment to the UVA community uniquely position him to serve as president at this moment,” the board stated. His comprehensive understanding of the university’s multifaceted responsibilities, spanning education, research, healthcare, athletics, and public service, is seen as a pivotal asset.

Acknowledgments and Transition

The university extended its gratitude to President Emeritus James E. Ryan for his service and to interim President Paul G. Mahoney for his stewardship during challenging times. Appreciation was also expressed for the Special Committee on the Nomination of a President, whose dedication was crucial in recommending such an exemplary candidate.

In the coming days, Beardsley plans to engage with the UVA community to share his vision and plans for the future. These interactions will offer opportunities for dialogue and collaboration as he transitions into his new role.

The appointment of the new president marks a significant milestone for the University of Virginia, one that reflects the collective input and support of its community members, all committed to advancing this esteemed institution.
