Perris Jones’ Inspiring Journey: From Adversity to Author and Speaker

The journey of Perris Jones, a multifaceted individual with accomplishments ranging from education to public speaking, is now chronicled in his latest endeavor as an author. With the release of his book “Ashes to Endzone,” Jones shares his life’s lessons, transcending beyond the realms of football, to explore themes of adversity, loss, and personal evolution.

Jones, a two-time graduate from the University of Virginia and a current doctoral student at the University of Louisville’s College of Education and Human Development, adds “author” to his impressive list of titles. His book, available for presale and officially releasing on August 4, delves into his life experiences, guided by the advice of a mentor who encouraged him to document his journey from a challenging childhood in Florida to overcoming trauma during his time at UVA.

Describing the writing process as therapeutic, Jones expressed, “I felt as if a weight was taken off of my shoulders, because a lot of times, the things we go through, once we’re through it, we put it on the shelf.” The narrative compelled Jones to confront parts of his past he had previously ignored, allowing him to heal.

Insights and Perspectives

The book features insights from former UVA teammates and an interview with Tony Elliott, head football coach at Wahoo, who shares his own experiences of overcoming tragedy. Jones appreciates Elliott’s contributions, stating, “He relays some of his experiences, which I think is really, really cool.”

Jones candidly recounts his childhood challenges, including surviving a house fire and having a strict upbringing under his father’s guidance. He recalls instances where his father would make him run 10 miles home if his mindset wasn’t right, with consequences for missing deadlines.

After reflecting on these experiences with his father, Jones acknowledges, “He was doing the best he knew how to do… preparing me for what he believed life would throw at me.” Despite the hardships, Jones found that these lessons equipped him with essential life tools.

Looking Ahead

Jones’s recent years have been marked by significant challenges, including a critical injury that led to spinal surgery. Passing by the University of Louisville’s Frazier Rehabilitation Institute, where he recovered, serves as a daily motivation for Jones. “It keeps me in the right mind frame of just how much I’m thankful for,” he remarked.

With a deep desire to inspire others, Jones hopes that even a single reader might find encouragement in his story. “Success from this book would be one life being changed,” Jones shared. “All I want is one person to read this book and say, ‘Man, I needed to hear that, and I’m better because of it.’”
